Who could forget the impact that ‘Friday On My Mind’ had on the charts when The EasyBeats burst on the UK scene in October 1966? The song went straight into the top ten and was followed by their second chart hit ‘Hello How Are You’. Other chart success followed around the world and in Australia `Easyfever’ developed that was very similar to ‘Beatlemania’.
‘Friday On My Mind’ was released in the UK on 14 October 1966. It reached #6 making it the group’s first big international hit. It also charted in multiple countries: #1 in Australia, #13 in Canada, #16 in the US, and the Top 10 in Germany, The Netherlands and France. The song sold over one million copies worldwide and was awarded a gold disc. Both songs were written by two of the members of the Easybeats: Scottish guitarist George Young and Dutch-born lead guitarist Harry Vanda who both went on to bigger things.
Vanda and Young also wrote many successful songs for other artistes. These included some wonderful hits including: ‘Love Is In The Air’ for John Paul Young and ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ also for Paul. This song later became a hit for The Bay City Rollers. When The EasyBeats lead singer Stevie Wright embarked on a solo career, Vanda and Young wrote and produced the evocative ‘Evie’ the three-part song split over two sides of a single. This was an instant classic hit in many countries. Vanda & Young also went onto produce the first six albums for AC/DC.
